I'm sure badges are like buttons. Colors,
etc. can make huge differences in design. Black and orange is the most
visible color combination. But "metallic threads" etc. might make as big a
difference as day-glo colors in paper. There is a fellow I interviewed for
my street fair project who sells assorted patches and metal pins at street
fairs, especially in the Village area. He has thousands. Picking
ones that were the most pleasing in color combination and then copying them for
color might be a very good idea.
I haven't explored the badge site in depth.
However, I used to be in the button business. If possible, it is always
best to get assorted background colors if possible. Surprisingly, people
will buy multiple buttons (or patches) to go with different color outfits, to
use in different places, etc.

I'm researching embroidered badges. That way, you can put
'em on your jacket or buttondown shirt or your camera bag or your hat.
They have iron on ones for those of us who don't - ahem - sew.

Collect 'em.
Trade 'em.
Cheap enough to give 'em
away.
