No dont just change the file extension, it will cause problems. movs
are not the same as mp4/m4v files.

I have a mp4 file here that works on the ipod and on quicktime etc. If
I rename it to .mov then it no longer opens at all in quicktime.

Use quicktime pro if you want to create real, valid mov files from mp4
files. However I beleive the method Richard suggested isnt quite
right, as that will involve the video being recompressed, wheras
ideally you want to convert the container from mp4 to mov, without
actually needing to re-encode the video and audio again.

If you created the mp4 using quicktime, you can load it into quicktime
and then select save as self-contained movie, and you will end up with
a mov version in seconds, as no reencoding is required.

If you created the mp4 using a different encoder, this may not work.
In this instance you will have to re-encode the video again when
converting to a mov, using the method that Richard mentioned.

Converting the other way round, from a mpeg4 .mov to a .mp4, is easy
and fast using quicktime pro. Open the mov and select 'export movie to
mpeg4, but select 'pass-through' as the video and audio type. This
will make a mp4 file from a mov without recompressing, and so is very
fast.
