Revision:

Frame Size: 640x480 (unscaled)

720x480 is the frame size for video with non-square pixels.  I noticed that my 
video has a 
black border on the left and right sides.  The NV3 is apparently capturing 
640x480 square 
pixels, so FCP will accept that frame size and translate it into 720x480 inside 
the program.  
When I loaded video @ 640x480, there were no black borders, it looked the way 
it should, 
and there was no need to render anything.
