Well, unfortunately, the vlog camp in Missouri is not in the Ozarks - the
Ozarks is approximately the bottom half of Missouri and the top half of
Arkansas bounded by the Missouri river on the north and Arkansas river on
the south - if you look at the topo version of google maps it's sort of
dramatic where the planes on the north and south turn into the hills and
hollers of the Ozarks in the middle. The reason the Ozarks was settled later
than everywhere else, largely by people from the Appalachians who were used
to the terrain, is that: a) The land is terrible for growing food; b) While
not mountainous like Colorado, the land is plenty hilly enough, and riddled
with spring fed steams, to have made it difficult to travel; and c) The
Osage were pretty grumpy about whites moving in. Therefore, most sane people
just went around when heading west ... but enough on the Ozarks.

However, I've talked with (whined at) Bill about the place he chose (not
being in my beloved Ozarks) and it turns out he's done a lot of research and
the place is perfect as far as having the comforts and other stuff we need
for the conference, and Bill has good relations with the people and it's
very reasonable in price and it will be totally cool! (And if the spirit
moves anyone they could drive an hour or so south and find the Ozarks, and I
could certainly give them advice on places to visit).

... Richard (the self-appointed Ozarks scholar)
