its not open source, but i really like http://www.lefora.com/ because
its so easy to set up an old school forum.
Making it private is easy.
The guys that make it (the Meebo dudes) are good in my book.
always respond to questions through their support.

As Adam said, Wordpress has several open source options if you dont
mind installing stuff on your own server.
we use bbPress.org for http://showinabox.tv/forum.
like wordpress, you just install free plugins and themes that are
available online.
