The reason she wants it is not for because she is interested in how it may have
been received. She wants to provide contemporary viewers with some
understanding of viewership at that time. I think this is part of a larger
project on audience in the 1920s and 1930s, not only of film, but also of
exhibits, exhibitions, etc. I think she is attempting to replicate that
experience for some group of people, so just knowing how it was cut would be
helpful, but not really fulfill her need.

Sorry. I don't know a whole lot about it, but this is what I got from our
discussion.

Might I add, why in the world does he want it? You can find pretty detailed
analyses of how METROPOLIS was cut in the US and elsewhere.

Metropolis is licensed to Kino. I don't believe the original 1927 MGM release
still exists. (A version, by the way, that Fritz Lang really hated.) Most of
the old versions date from the postwar prints that the US Government took from
Germany after WWII.

All,

I have a faculty member that is looking for the original US version of
Metropolis (not the original German version). We have a version on 16mm, which
could be this version, but I don't think it is. Also, who would own the rights
to this version in the US (if available)?
