Hi Larry

Whichever way Newsreel, WMM, Icarus, and Bullfrog go, I would urge maximum
flexibility and choice. I have, for instance, been impressed by the
willingness of FMG and, now, Ambrose to provide either remote access to
content or licensing of digital files for local delivery from an
institution's server.

I can see definite benefits and/or liabilities with both of the above
models. In my book, the remote delivery model will only work if it allows
the library to license on a "per title" basis (i.e. rather than having to
accept a pre-existing collection or grouping of titles). This would, of
course, make life a lot harder on your end in terms of tracking, billing,
etc.

It also seems to me that for those of us lucky enough to have the choice
between local and remote, the decision is somewhat dependent on tech
features, such as vendor delivery platform(s), image quality, network
requirements and network stability, user interface, etc.

Just some prelim thoughts.

Gary

"I have always preferred the reflection of life to life itself."
--Francois Truffaut

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
