I agree with Myles on this. The selection process is like Amazon on steroids,
and the provided selection lists can be more of a hinderance than a help. It
is tricky to avoid buying duplicate titles from varying publishers.

I would disagree with the pros of their website. I find it to be a disaster
and difficult to navigate and make selections on. Everything else is spot on
though.

Hi,
I bought extensively from Overdrive when I worked for a large public library
system. I even presented at and attended one of their conferences. In my
experience, these are the following pros and cons.

Pros:

Very organized site
Great purchasing interface
Great collection development staff who will make purchasing lists, etc. for you
Decent selection of e-books and audiobooks
Decent selection of educational videos
One of the only vendors in this business

Cons:

Poor music and popular video selection.
Not compatible with many ILS' so Overdrive material must be on a separate
website/database
Big learning curve for customers/patrons esp. with DRM management
Popular audiobooks very expensive (over $100 for 1)

Dear Colleagues,

Do any of you have experience with Overdrive, and if so, can you let
me know your thoughts in terms of: user experience, manageability and
cost for movies? Is this service more widely used by public libraries
than academic libraries?

Many thanks in advance.

Best,

Elizabeth
