OLAC (Online Audiovisual Catalogers) has developed a prototype for a FRBR-inspired, work-centric, faceted discovery interface for moving images, which is available at http://blazing-sunset-24.heroku.com. The OLAC Work-Centric Moving Image Discovery Interface Prototype is an exploration of the possibilities of leveraging the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model and faceted search to improve access to moving image materials held by libraries and archives.
We are very interested in getting feedback on this concept. The prototype is a small-scale, low-budget demonstration with a limited number of records and fields so it's not intended to include all the information you might want about a movie nor to have all the functionality of a production system. I am particularly interested in feedback on the general conceptual approach, i.e., the presentation of a two-level view (original movies/programs and versions/publications/locations) and the use of two corresponding facet sets to answer the questions "What kind of movie/program do you want? (genre, original date, directed by, etc.)" and "How do you want it (format, language options, location, etc.)?" Comments, questions, complaints, and suggestions may be sent to me at kell...@uoregon.edu. Also, if you are interested in contributing to a longer-term project to try to bring this idea into a production environment, please let me know. Kelley McGrath Metadata Management Librarian University of Oregon VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
