Earlier this year we removed from our open stacks any VHS tape that had 0 circ
since January 1, 2006.

If we had already replaced with DVD, we discarded the tape. We did not discard
the other tapes, but moved them into remote storage (In the same building, just
not in public space). They show in the catalog as "Storage" and are
requestable.

Some of these videos ARE being requested and used. We are not returning them
to the open stacks if they are used. But after a year we will pull the use
data on those programs and most likely replace them with DVDs.

I think it is a mistake to assume that no use of something in a format that
users no longer have ready access to is an indication that the content has no
value. We still have about 75 laserdiscs of titles that have not been
released on DVD.... We have a player in the library. We continue to monitor
for DVD releases of some of those titles.

Perhaps they are candidates for Section 108 copying....

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
