Hello all,

I am new to this listserv and I will be undertaking the role of cataloguing
streaming video at UBC. A lot of this is new to me and I hope that you might
assist in answering a few questions for me.

We have both remote and locally hosted (i.e. a on-time deal) video streaming.
Primarily, I have been asked to look for MARC records for the remotely hosted
streaming.

I have talked to staff here and others for their impression of MARC records out
there. The remote data bases I am interested in for now are:

Films on Demand
Medici TV
Criterion
Alexander Street Press videos
National Film Board of Canada

Questions:

1) Are MARC records available for all titles in the list from the
companies that provide the streaming video?

2) What is the quality of the MARC records provided?

3) How often are new records supplied when new items are added to the data
base?

4) What is the monthly cost for the updates?

5) Do URL links to remote video cause problems and require library systems
intervention to some degree?

I have read a few comments as to what companies are providing MARC records i.e.
Serials Solutions, OCLC.

Has anyone already made a comparison of companies providing MARC records they
would like to share?

Thanks very much!

Terry

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
