Videolib-ers,

Over the years we have all benefited from many a lively, and occasionally
heated, discussion.

Since yesterday, I have been contacted off-list by several subscribers
(librarians and distributors alike) who are profoundly disappointed and/or
intimidated by some exchanges that have been interpreted as critiques or
personal attacks on specific librarians' curatorial practices and/or
character.

I have never had such a response to a thread before, and while there are
clearly some opposing and varied viewpoints here, I think we can all agree
that we have reached a tone heretofore not seen on videolib. There are
folks who are afraid to respond to posts-- and folks who have decided to
leave us because of a lack of collegiality in communication.

We have always included a sentence in the videonews subscription statement
reserving the right to revoke subscriptions in the case where the intent of
the list or general listserv etiquette is violated-- I have added such
language to the videolib subscription statement (please see
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/vrtlists.html).

Please note that name calling, personal attacks and impugning an individual
librarian's (or distributor's) ethical and professional values will not be
tolerated on this forum. I do reserve the right to revoke subscriptions--
it is not a power I take lightly-- and one I hope to not have to use.

Please never hesitate to contact me on or off list with feedback,
commentary, concerns-- especially those of you who may be considering
jumping ship. We need your voice and perspectives.

NOTE: PART TIME SCHEDULE Monday-Thurs 8AM-2PM
VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
