My next step, I suppose is to review all the relevant registry keys, but I wanted to see if there were other thoughts on this...?
At least in the source, there is a GvimExt.reg file. You can edit this file (add absolute paths) and add it to the registry (double-clicking on it should do that). install.exe appears to be kind of non-working here.
