I'm on Thunderbird too. Since I use only plaintext, under "Account
Settings" (which is a submenu of "Edit" under Linux, of "Tools" under
Windows), in "Composition & Addressing", I have un-checked the box
"Compose messages in HTML format". If you want to send in HTML to some
people and in plaintext to others it's possible too.
Another thing: On this list, bottom-posting or inter-posting (placing
the reply after whatever it is that one replies to) is usually preferred
to top-posting.
