Yes, but what I like to do is to change the shape to something like
the cursor shape used in the gui apps (a pipe like |), to make vim act
like gvim. Now after a lot o time using vim with a square-like text
cursor shape I'm already accustomed, but i think i | is better.

IIUC, at least some text terminals allow changing the height, but not the width, of the cursor. Don't know how to access that property from Vim though, except in the Dos/Windows console.
