Have you checked the setting of
System Preferences->Appearance->Turn off text smoothing for font sizes ...
?

You probably have, but just in case, and because I tend to
overlook such trivial stuff ;)
Yeah, I've checked and changed it a few times, no difference. I even
built a custom version with a patch that I found that enables
antialiasing when the ATSUI rendering mode is used. It worked on my
original machine, as before, but not on the second one.
