The "fi" and " ` " etc are unknown to vim and it refuses to paste them...

What do you have 'encoding' set to? If it is set to Latin1, try adding the
following to your vimrc:
if (&enc !~? '^u') && (&tenc == '')
let &tenc = &enc
endif
set enc=utf8
setglobal bomb
