It depends how you paste. If you type "+p in normal mode then the
contents of the clipboard are pasted verbatim, but if you type ^R+
while in insert mode then the clipboard contents are wrapped in the
same way as any other inserted text.
Ah, this I did not know obviously, and it will be a very useful alternative.
