Correct, you don't need X11 to run Vim but Nikolai was talking about the
--remove functionality.  This does require an active and accessible X
session which Vim uses as the message passing facility.  If this were
changed to use some other form of IPC, then people could use the
--remote functionality in more circumstances than they currently can.
