Has it given you a gvim (with GUI) as well as a vim (no GUI)?

The RedHat/Fedora stock RPMs do this, albeit via repeated builds; I
alias 'vim'/'vi' to 'gvim -v' which starts the GUI-capable one in text mode.

Just my tuppence, it doesn't sound like it'll be your issue.
