Even though I rarely use the Perl interface, this is something I've also wondered. It appears the Python interface does, and I assume the others do as well. Why not Perl?
I could try to make a patch for this if it would be welcome.
My guess is that it would be. Just be sure to check out ":help coding-style" (and possibly all of ":help develop.txt").
