I would love to have this, too, if only because after so many happy years with Vim (a heartfelt thanks to Bram and all developers!), I'm running out of keys for my custom mappings :-) Though I'm too ignorant of the internals (and can therefore only offer to do some testing), I agree that this probably cannot be done in a single patch.
