Not for me.  It stays on the first a, as I expected it to.  Vim
7.3.138 and 7.2.330.

But I see your point, n does not repeat the last search.  It doesn't
even repeat the second search, which is backwards, rather it searches
forward, as the help says.

I recall noticing this quirk years ago, and learning that n and N are
not reliable using //;
