you're competing with something that's free." -- Carl Howe
And yet there are water companies that make healthy (for them) profits:
Perrier is one, and there are many others. Some have even become
household words, e.g. Spa, a Belgian town famous for the "Compagnie
fermière des eaux et bains de Spa" (wfw ~ the Lessee Company of the
Waters and Baths of Spa) aka Spa-Monopole, which commercialises the
waters, springs and baths of "the" original Spa since at least the
eighteenth century (the town itself was already a water resort named
Aquæ Spadanæ under the Roman rule).
In Dutch (or more precisely in Hollandic) any gaseous water is called
"spa rood" (wfw. spa-red) and any non-gaseous bottled water, "spa blauw"
(wfw. spa-blue) from the colors of the labels of the two main products
of the Spa-Monopole company. (In Belgian Dutch aka Flemish they are more
prosaically named respectively "spuitwater" wfw. spout-water and
"platwater" wfw. flat water.)
Similarly, even packaging open-source products allows competition
against something that is free, if your selling price is decently low
and consistent with the extra service offered (packaging and possibly
assistance) on top of the free product.
Best regards,
Tony.

CART DRIVER: Bring out your dead!
We follow the cart through a wretched, impoverished plague-ridden
village.
A few starved mongrels run about in the mud scavenging. In the open
doorway of one house perhaps we jug glimpse a pair of legs dangling from
the ceiling. In another doorway an OLD WOMAN is beating a cat against a
wall rather like one does with a mat. The cart passes round a dead
donkey
or cow in the mud. And a MAN tied to a cart is being hammered to
death by
four NUNS with huge mallets.
