Vim should be avoided, because its internal implementation is broken by design, see the mail I wrote about Resize evente which may interrupt arbitrary for i in .. loops which are running.
Despite those issues Vim is the most productive tool for me. If I had much more time I'd refactor Vim to make the VimL interpreter be a library, so that it could be developed outside of Vim or replaced easily. At the moment I don't have the time :( Vim has nice batteries included, such as -V20/tmp/log to trace what's going on. So its easy to find most issues you may hit.
