That's how it's always been with Vim: there is no fixed schedule for
releases, the next release happens when all of the following conditions
are met:
- there has been enough changes since the previous release to justify a
new one
- the new changes have "baked" long enough in (alpha and) beta to give
an impression of stability (especially in Bram's opinion); nothing
important seems to be half done
- Bram has enough free time to build and publish a new release.
In this case, the most visible new feature in Vim 7.4 is the new regexp
engine, but I see a steady stream of new bugfixes for it coming almost
every time I run "hg in" in the Vim repository so I wouldn't think it
has yet reached "stability". Exactly how long it will have to go on
baking is anyone's guess, or at least /I/ wouldn't venture to guess.
Of several features which were new in 7.3, the one which seems (to me,
and at first glance) most visible in the list of bugfixes between 7.3.0
and the current 7.4b.*, is support for Python 3, which can be
compiled-in with or without the older Python 2 support. We'll see if it
still sees new bugs after the 7.4 release. We all hope it doesn't, but
only time will tell.
