doesn't stop if there's non-whitespace after ending "*"

The correct logic is that the surrounded text must have non-whitespace
characters on either side and the "*" cannot be proceeded or followed by a
word character. In other words, it be looking for non-word characters
outside the "*" and non-whitespace at the boundaries of the inner text.
