That's the wrong way of fixing this in my opinion:
- It assumes that plural is n != 1.  Rules for what's plural or singular
  are different in different languages.
  In English, plural is for n != 1.  In French plural is for n >= 2 for example.
- It assumes that there are only 2 forms (plurals and singular), but
  several languages have more than 2 plural forms (Polish has 3 for example).

The right way to fix it would be to use the plural form feature of gettext.
