I'm no grammarian (where is Tony when you need him?), but I'll give it a shot. Alike means having a close similarity or being indistinguishable in some respect, whereas "and the like" means et cetera, "and similar things," or sharing some common similarity suggested by the item(s) preceding it. You might say that some set of things are alike, but you are referring to some unspecified things that are like the thing already mentioned.
