Is there a reason to set this rather than the standard b:did_ftplugin?
 I'd assumed it was a search and replace error.

See :help ftplugin_overrule (point 3) and :help ftplugin (DISABLING)

No other ftplugin is using a filetype specific variable name for this purpose.
