I followed the FAQ and it actually works! I had previously installed MacTeX 2008 on my OS X Leopard system.
One thing I noticed, is that the menu for the templates just has numbers like: 1: 2: 3: 4: and not 1: article etc. This information comes up instead has little yellow help notes.
