That's because your MacBook Pro has a light sensor, and when it's  
darker, it dims the screen (this can be disabled in System Preferences- 
 >Displays, the checkbox at the bottom). As it turns out, the light  
sensor is at the top left, so your hand covers it when you hit escape.

Where did you download MacVim from? Confusingly, at macvim.org there  
is only an old and sucky version of vim for mac – which does not have  
`:h macvim`. MacVim is available at http://code.google.com/p/macvim/ .
