I'd like to point out that this isn't a function of common sense but of
memory.  If you weren't part of the conversation in the first place, a very
common thing for usenet and mailing lists, you *can't* remember the thread.

A very important condition, and not always adhered to.  One has no way of
knowing if the thread were effectively and efficiently replied to *without*
reading through the entire thread.  Again, in the case of usenet and mailing
lists, this is something that is highly likely.  Further exacerbating the
problem are those who follow list/group net-iquette and those who don't.
Following a thread that is top posted only is rather difficult.  Following a
thread that is both top and bottom posted in downright frustrating.

many of whom I've wondered.)
