I think "that" is the "position of the Esc [key] when the first vi was developed" Though I'm not sure about that -- I've been using computers for quite a while (over 20 years...dang, I feel old & geeky) and the Esc has always been in the top-left of the keyboard: from Apple ][ series computers to my first x86 PC, to the DEC Ultrix keyboards.
