I think there is a possibility that this stems from a 'guifont' setting 
incompatible with the current Vim build, or specifying a font not 
installed on the current system.

There are four dirrerent incompatible settings for 'guifont' (five, if 
you include the format used by the obsolete kvim), and each gvim version 
accepts only one of these formats.
