Sounds like you have an insufficiently conspicuous cursor. See :help guicursor if you're using gvim; I have mine set to a 200 ms blink. For vim in a terminal, you're at the mercy of what your terminal supports. I use gnome-terminal block cursor with the blink rate set to about 8 Hz, hard to miss. guicursor can change the size and colour of the cursor, too.
