Combining the two answers you've received, I find myself using macros in the sweet-spot when the following conditions apply: 1) that it's something that's too complex for the dot/period repeat command or a fairly straightforward :g command (though the power of the :g command usually gives me what I need in 95% of the cases) 2) it's something I need to do repeatedly in the current document (or set of documents) 3) it's something that I don't ever expect to need to do again (in which case I am more apt to write a mapping and save it somewhere).
