I did not think of it and I have been using the VIM_SERVERNAME environment variable for this purpose. @Bram, can we have a environment variable indicating that we are in a Vim Terminal? Possibly which also includes the Vim patchlevel? That is also quite useful, when deciding whether to use the terminal API.
