Hi,
iPod Touch users who use the U.S. iTunes Store can now access the two
free speech recognition apps by Nuance: Dragon Dictation and Dragon
Search. For new users, these apps are products of Nuance
Communications, the parent orgranization of the "Dragon Naturally
Speaking" and "MacSpeech Dictate" software programs and use their
speech recognition engines. The first app, "Dragon Dictation", lets
you dictate material in 30 second chunks, and have the results
returned to you as text that you can edit and send on as text
messages, mail, or copy and paste into notes or other applications.
The second app, "Dragon Search", lets you run a voice based query as a
search. For example, you could speak the terms of a Google search you
want to run and have the results come back on the web page. You must
have an internet connection (WiFi in the case of iPod Touch users) to
use these apps. Practiced iPhone users who have been using these apps
for the last few weeks can probably answer questions and may note if
there are new features or improvements. The Nuance blog announcement
states:
We have introduced a new configuration parameter for Dragon Dictation;
you can now choose the end-of-speech detection to be automatic. This
will let the application auto-detect when you finish speaking without
tapping the “Done” button.
Also, new users should note that there was considerable discussion
about the privacy policy on list. Dragon Dictation originally sent
the contact names from your iPhone Address book along with the
dictated samples to their servers. The reason for this was that many
people also wanted their spoken text to accurately spell out names of
contacts so as to send on text messages and email, and in order to
reliably recognize and render text for these names they accessed the
contacts (but not the addresses, etc.) on the iPhone. You can read
more about this in their statement about "What Dragon Dictation for
the iPhone Does (and Doesn't Do) with Your Contacts":
>
You are now presented with the option to "opt out" of having your
contacts used when you start this app. Please read the Privacy Policy
in detail at their web site before making a decision about using these
apps. You can find this information here:
http://www.nuance.com/company/privacy/
Finally, I note that when I listened to the agreements, they mentioned
usage covering the U.S. and Canadian app stores, but I can only find
these apps currently in the U.S. iTunes Store.
