As far as I know, there isn't a "learn mode" in GB for control surfaces like there is in Logic. However, I do have two different drivers installed which seem to help GB learn what it needs to.one is actually called something like "Logic and Garage Band Kontrol Plugin." The other is just a Nano Kontrol driver. I'd be happy to send over these files to anyone who would like them. Good luck.
