I'm trying to get this LC 520 running. I recently replaced the hard drive with one that is not an Apple-branded drive. This caused a problem initially when I couldn't use Apple HD SC to Initialize it. Someone (you know who you are, Thanks) was kind enough to help me out. Then I couldn't mount CDs. Then I could, but not the CD I wanted to use (a burned disc with 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 on it). I'm still hitting obstacles every step of the way. Come to find out, that was the non-HFS version of the disc that I had originally created to resurrect a Quadra. I don't know what happened to the disc that I ended up using on the Quadra.
So I decided it was time to make a CD that had everything I could need (that I know of) to get a Vintage machine running 7.5.5 (7.5.3, 7.5.5, TCP/IP, HD SC (patched), Drive Setup (patched), browsers, FTP, StuffIt Expander, etc.). Y'all probably have your own similar discs, but I wanted to make my own so that I know what's on there. I've got everything downloaded on my PC. Everything is in neat little folders. I"m stuck at the patching of HD SC and Drive Setup. I've pulled down the patch files which at .sit and .sea files respectively. I've got StuffIt Expander 5.5 on my Windoze machine the .sit file give me some "blah blah blah archive may be encrypted or corrupted". The extracted file is 0 bytes. The .sea files give me "blah blah blah not in the expected format". I've used HFVExplorer to transfer all of the files (including HD SC and Drive Setup) to a floppy. Insert it into my Quadra (which also has Stuffit Expander 5.5 running on System 7.5.5). The application files (.smi.bin) mount and work. The .sit and .sea files just look like blank documents. No helper application. Dragging them to StuffIt Expander does nothing. I booted up my MDD running Tiger. Downloaded the same files again. Installed the latest version of StuffIt Expander. No go. I can't do anything with the files on that machine either. Where have I gone wrong? Until I can get HD SC and Drive Setup patched, I'm kinda at a stopping point on getting the 520 running. In the end, I would like, if possible, for everything on the burned CD to be decompressed and ready to go on a machine that may or may not have Disk Copy or StuffIt Expander on it. Which file formats (i.e. .bin, .hqx, .sit, .sea, .smi, .dmi, .dsk, etc.) are natively usable with System 7.x? Thanks.
