It's kind of a shame, really. A lot of the big iron, old-world companies like AT&T, Bell, etc. had whole research arms that did lots of important stuff. Bell Labs and UNIX and other early OSes, Xerox and all their work with GUIs, SmallTalk, Ethernet, and the like, Olivetti... most of them are gone now, or shadows of their former selves. It's always somewhat amused me that several of the biggest products of these labs (Ethernet, GUIs, etc..) ended up not making much money for their originators at all. Since we're talking about computer histories, my family was always more of an Atari family. My dad even got mentioned in an old Antic magazine (archived at http://www.atarimagazines.com/v4n11/atariatwork.html under the Dr. Atari section). We could never afford the fancier computers like an ST or Mac, but as a budding computer geek I sure looked on longingly. In the end I ended up with mostly cheap PC clone equipment, as well as home-built, but I've always had a soft spot for Macs. Especially the earlier ones with such neat design in them.
