Hello Group. I pulled my old Mac Plus out of the basement, and fired it up hoping to run the ancient Microsoft File application in order to retrieve some information out of a database for a friend.
Everything looked good; it started up on a floppy system, and then I plugged in the old SCSI 40Mb hard drive that I had. It booted up on that, and I started poking around, fondly remembering the 'good' ol days. After it had been running for about 15 minutes, the screen suddenly went blurry and kind of zig-zaggy, it made a kind of staticy crackling noise and that was it. I attempted to reboot, from both the floppy and the hard drive, but it gives the 'sad Mac' icon with the error code 30040. The screen works fine and is clear, but nothing happens. I'm guessing this is motherboard related, and that things went sideways as soon as it heated up. Kind of hate to landfill this old beast after so many years, but maybe its time has come. If anybody has any ideas on how it might be resurrected, let me know. As an aside, it's been a real adventure trying to extract this data from a Microsoft File database. At one time, it ran on a System 7 Mac IIci, but when I loaded it onto a PowerBook 3400 running 7.5, the application kept crashing on startup. I'm guessing it needs an older machine to work properly, which is why I hauled out the Mac Plus. So I'm still stuck looking for a way to run Microsoft File. -- ----- You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group.
