I second that. I've taken hard drives apart before (Dead ones, but
still) and there's a reason they're airtight except for a tiny hole
with a special air filter. Any dust or particles and it'll crash the
read heads.
Beeping is usually indicative of a failed drive. I was able to fix a
beeping drive by hitting it, actually. Although, it sounds like you
might just want to get another HD.
Did you try the auto-spin both on and off? You should probably do
that, since it might be only one or the other option that works. (If
the drive isn't broken.)
