In ye olden days of personal computers, serial ports used a 25 pin connector. 
Then some smart person figured out that the RS-232 and RS-242 protocols didn't 
need anywhere near that many pins and produced the 9 pin serial port (used on 
PCs and many not-Mac computers) while Apple had to "Think Different" and use 
RS-242 with the round mini DIN connector.
