I used Norton Utilities for Mac, mainly because it had the only defragmenter
that would work on the boot drive and drives with a virtual memory file that's
in use. Never had a problem with it.

Other utilities required turning off virtual memory and booting from another
disk or volume with the utility on it to defrag the main boot disk.

I also used Jump Development's RAM Charger 8.1, which works OK through OS 8.5.
To use it with Virtual Memory under OS 8.5.1 or 8.6 with virtual memory it
requires RAM Doubler, which can be used with RAM compression OFF so that only
its virtual memory function is working.
