That's incorrect, apple has full versions of mac os 6 and 7 legally
downloadable from them for free. Similarly, this is mac os 9 from them
for free in disguise. What this is in it's current form is a server
deployed mac os 9 NetBoot client. But if you google "mac os 9 NetBoot"
you will find guides on how to extract a fully functioning universal
mac os 9 system folder from this image. There's absolutely no reason
for apple to provide this for public download since as they say on
that page the image is already provided with copies of mac os x
server, so think about what they're really doing here and also
consider how despite this page not only being widely publicized but
several guides on how to use it for your benefit have been written
they gave not pulled this... ;)
It'd be interesting to read the license included with it. Just because
the files are available and it's possible doesn't necessarily mean it'd
be strictly legal to use it as a universal install. To compare,
Microsoft provides locked down and time-limited downloads of Virtual PC
images of XP and Vista (and maybe 7 by now) with various versions of IE
for browser testing. But, it wouldn't be legal to extract the Windows
files from there, fiddle them, and use it as a normal copy of Windows.
They're specifically licensed for limited VM use for browser testing.
Likewise this OS 9 might be licensed strictly for use as a netboot
client and not as a main install. Shame the license isn't visible
without downloading it; I don't have access to my Macs at work.
Whether Apple would really care or go to the trouble of pulling it is
another question; I know they did do a big crackdown on sites
distributing other old and very old versions of System Software some
years ago.
