Someday id like to get one of these guys to try to reverse engineer it in
hopes I can make something like it. Or at least see how it translates
ethernet packets into scsi commands

Probably means the adapter itself is working, yes. But, you'll still need a
driver on the Mac OS side for the system to see and use it. How you select
it and what functions it supports also depends on whether you have Open
Transport installed or if you're working with the old classic networking.
Once it's working, it should be fully functional on its own without any sort
of other Mac as a TCP/IP client for internet apps. Appletalk file sharing
may be problematic depending on what version of OS X your other Macs have,
but there's lots of discussion about that on the LEM site.
