I was recently playing around with Basilisk (the free 68k emulator for Mac and PC) when I stumbled upon an interesting feature - ethernet capabilities. This got me thinking - could I initiate appletalk between my Dell PC and an older Mac? After setting up 8.0 (on the virtual machine), I made my first foray into the world of networking - attempting to load Google. To my amazement, the emulator loaded it fine. Very fast as well. My next test was a bit more ambitious - set up appletalk between two machines. I got my 8500 set up, and plugged it into the router. Once appletalk was set up, I tried to log onto the 8500 from the PC; success! To test it out, I tried to move a file (Glider) from the emulator to the 8500's shared folder, and it worked a treat. Of course, it wasn't over until I had tried the ultimate test, so I pulled out my old IIfx and set it up next door to the 8500. I got it on the router using an AAUI/RJ45 transceiver and an AAUI NUBUS card, and got appletalk running. I then set up sharing, got on the PC and presto! It comes up! I then moved some files from my old IIfx to the emulator hitch free.
This gets me thinking - my PC has now replaced the 8500 as my bridge machine completely. No more moving files over countless floppy disks and SCSI drives anymore! The best thing about Basilisk is that you have a fully operational 68k environment with all the bells and whistles of an actual machine - with windows file access. This is gonna save some massive desk space.
