Hi Jay T, There is no way (at least that I am aware of) to boot from the ROMs in the machine to a desktop GUI. Although the computer will, if I am remembering that far back correctly, actually run with up to system 7.5.5 (again, from memory) I would recommend actually using a 6.0.3 or higher (probably 6.0.8). If, again, I am remembering anything correctly from back in that day you would really need a hard drive to boot the system 7.x, anyway.
If there is one thing that I will never forget about the Macintosh computers from back in the day it is that if you are trying to boot from one floppy and run a program from another AND you have only one floppy drive you are in for a sure fire treat of floppy swap heaven. Prepare yourself for excitement like you have never experienced before! I would be sure to upgrade the computer to the maximum 4MB or RAM if it is only at the 1MB standard which was sold. There are four slots for the 30-pin SIMM RAM in those and the machine generally came with four 256K populated. Those machines will only work if all slots are filled so you cannot put a single stick of RAM into the thing and expect it to power on, correctly. It has been a while since I shopped for that memory but I would bet you can still find it out there on the web. You mentioned that you are looking for a mouse. I do know that there has been a seller on eBay for a while, now, with a whole bunch of brand new of the Macintosh mice with the DB-9 connectors. The seller's name is "jmorand" and, currently, the mice are listed under item number 380186630773. I am not making any comment on the seller's integrity or trustworthiness, nor on the product as he describes it, I just remember that I had seen that a couple of months ago and wanted make you aware of that possible option. Good luck with the vintage machine. They are a treat to work with, especially when compared with the quality of workmanship and design of many of the 'modern' machines. Many 'happy Macs'!
